on a completely separate note: if you haven't noticed, my godparents are visiting. i actually have 2 sets of them. you kno, just in case my parents' incompetency is greater than they anticipated. (kidding. my parents are great.) anyway, they both are here, and something i've noticed -- and appreciate very much -- about my illinois godfather is that he will almost always open the car door for me and my godmother (or any lady for that matter). not only does he open it, but he'll wait until we're settled in and close it for us too. that's impressive. i'm not sure what it is, but maybe it's just an art that (some men in) the midwest and east coast have not lost. the west? well, we're obviously awesomer. but i can't recall any gentleman on this side of the mississippi with that habit.

I think it's more of a personal kind of thing to open and close a car door for women. Depending on how feminist you are, you may or may not appreciate/tolerate that kind of behavior. I think lots of guys would definitely do the car door thing if you hinted you were fine with it.
The main difference is that for some reason people associate opening and closing of car doors with children and the elderly/disabled. However, accepting an open door of a building from a complete stranger is perfectly acceptable (although I have seen some people decline such an offer).
